FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
1. I don't have a big house. Can I still host a concert?
Of course! The concert could be in your home, or another space you have access to. A living room, yard, deck, a friend’s home, a space you rent, etc! If you’d like advice on the best space for you to use, we love to talk this over. Many people enjoy hosting outdoors during warmer weather season.
2. How many people are you expecting? I don't think I can get 50 people to come to my house.
Small size gatherings are wonderful, most house concerts have had 20-60 people in attendance. It can be tailored to the needs of your space and what you want. Generally we encourage people to invite 2-3x as many people as you’d like to attend, as not everyone can or will say yes.
3. Does it cost money to host a house concert?
We have tried A LOT of things in this area. The full answer to this is yes, it does cost money to bring our band to perform in your space, but the trick is, there are many ways to get there and if affordability is part of what's holding you back, let's talk! We love to collaborate on creative funding approaches with our hosts.
4. Are you coming to my area?
The secret is… we are using this process of gathering interest to determine where we go next .. either now or later, so don’t be shy, register your interest with us and we’ll see what we can do! We love traveling, so that is very much not a problem!
5. Can I book your band or duo for my house concert?
We prefer to book our band whenever possible - it’s the fuller embodiment of what we envision Shiny Shiny Black to be - and we are a unique band in that from the ground up we’ve wanted to be as living room friendly as we are to a larger stage. In other words, our band will not be too loud for your space and it will be an enjoyable listening experience! We do have Nate in his producer hat on tap for this thing. That said, the full band is not always available and in that regard we may make you an offer that is our duo or some other combination. 😊
6. How do I plan this thing?
One of the great things about house concerts is that overall they are low stress and you can make it as fancy or simple as you want! We have a house concert guide we will send your way and can answer any questions that come up as you plan. In short, it will contain ideas like bringing a lawn chair or blanket if your event is outdoors, or encouraging folks to bring a dish to share and make it a potluck (if that’s your jam).
7. What exactly is the order of events for the evening?
We like to arrive about 2-3 hrs before the start time to have a relaxed set up time so we are ready to greet attendees and hang out when people arrive. We generally like there to be an hour of socializing prior to the concert, the concert might run 60-75 min and then more time to connect afterwards.
8. Do you need a place to crash?
Having help with lodging is always appreciated, but not required by any means! Sometimes we’ve already made other arrangements, but if you have something to offer just let us know, and we will most likely take you up on that.
9. Ok, I think I can do this!! What's next?
Alright - yes! This is one of our favorite type of music events because it’s about having fun and enjoying music at a human level, person to person. The next step is to join our waiting list to express your interest in hosting! Thank you!
