There's a particular quality to the best coffeehouse rock and roll: it doesn't demand anything from you. It creates a space, settles into it, and invites you in. The room gets quiet not because people are politely listening but because they actually want to hear what comes next. Shiny Shiny Black makes that kind of music.
Nate and Amber Butler, the husband and wife duo at the heart of Shiny Shiny Black, have been building their world from Goshen, Indiana since 2012: writing, recording, and performing wherever and whenever possible. Their music is built on classic guitar tones, irresistible hooks, and harmonies that feel lived-in. But what makes them a duo in the truest sense goes beyond shared instruments: Nate's songs lean toward warmth and forward motion; Amber's toward reflection and emotional depth. Together they hold more of what it actually feels like to be alive than either could alone, music that carries real weight without being heavy, that holds its ground without raising its voice. As their own tagline puts it: tragic songs make a path to optimism's home.
Their catalog reflects that range honestly. Some songs are quiet and tender enough to ask a room to hold its breath; others are full-band rock tracks—electric guitar throughout, drums up, energy high enough to make stillness impossible. The through-line isn't a genre, it's a point of view: music that takes people seriously, whatever it's doing sonically.
Performing as a duo or with their full band, featuring keyboardist Simon Kauffman Hurst, bassist Isaac Fisher, and drummer Arthur Schroeder, SSB brings both the warmth of a living room and the energy of a proper rock show. That energy is channeled through very specific "colors": thumpy drums and dark bass anchor rocking electric guitars, seasoned with folk instruments and keyboard textures that move between organ swells and acoustic piano. Their music spans decades of American music, from mandolins and acoustic guitars to the drum machines of “In the Air Tonight.”
At a Shiny Shiny Black show, the room tends to get quiet first, and then it gets loud. They switch fluidly between duo and full-band formats depending on what fits their stage and the context. Their house concerts are among the most personal and direct experiences they offer, giving audiences access to the songs and the stories behind them in a way traditional venues rarely allow. Their festival sets bring the full power of the band to bear, proof that music this emotionally loaded was always going to sound right at scale.
Their discography reflects a band that keeps growing. The 2023 full-length Reverberations earned them Folk Album of the Year and Folk Single of the Year at Indiana’s inaugural 2025 Naptones Music Awards. Their song "Reverie" was a Finalist in the 20th Annual International Acoustic Music Awards (IAMA) in the AAA/Alternative category. "Stranger in My Own Town" received a nomination in the Hollywood Independent Music Awards in Americana/Roots. Their 2025 single "Say the Words" was nominated in the Josie Music Awards (Nashville) for Folk Song of the Year and Performance Music Video of the Year, and led them to become First Runner Up at Oaklawn’s Got Talent, a regional mental health fundraiser. Their holiday EP What Stops Time (2025) earned national coverage from B-Sides & Badlands, Obscure Sound, Music Mecca, Rock the Pigeon and Indie Tapes. In early 2026 they released "Times Squared" and a live version of "When You Get That Look," continuing a consistent release cadence that has kept them active and visible across streaming platforms.
The press has taken notice across their career: the South Bend Tribune noted their ability to move between "warm, close harmonies and an intimate directness" and sounding "like a raucous garage band." The Goshen News heard guitar tones that "pull listeners back to the punchy, trebly sounds of Dick Dale and The Ventures." Americana Daily, WGCS The Globe 91.1 FM, and regional media have tracked their growth for over a decade. And Will Kimbrough, the acclaimed singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has worked with Todd Snider, Jimmy Buffett, and Emmylou Harris, put it simply: “I was impressed with Nate personally: he seemed kind and smart and funny. Now I'm impressed with his new Shiny Shiny Black music.”
Behind the music, Nate and Amber co-founded Nimble Wit Productions in 2003, a music and audio production company whose client roster includes HarperCollins, Magnolia Network, artists on Sony Records and New West Records, NPR, and PBS. This is not a hobby project; it's a career built on craft, community, and the kind of long-game thinking that produces music worth returning to.
Shiny Shiny Black performs throughout the US in traditional venues, listening rooms, and festivals, and in the living rooms of listeners who want more than a concert. They have shared stages with Will Kimbrough, Phil Madeira, Alan Rhody, Kevin Gordon, The Accidentals, and The Bergamot. They bring professionalism, warmth, and a genuine belief that music still has the power to make people feel less alone.
